artificial intelligence lives when data is live
Early-Stage AI for Business Status in Disasters by SpotOnResponse and the University of Illinois-Chicago
For the past several years, SpotOnResponse has led projects to collect real-time business status reports from SpotOnResponse mobile app and desktop applications as well as other authoritative business closing sources. More than 30 states and federal agencies registered to use the business status information.
Here are assessments of the Los Angeles Wildfire data and forecasts made by the SpotOnResponse AI model to project the likelihood of non-reporting businesses being closed. This use of AI models to help communities better understand the impact of disasters on infrastructure has been made possible through a collaboration between SpotOnResponse and the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Authoritative Data is Critical to Meaningful and Understandable AI Results
Here We Validate Status Reporting Data with On-Site Damage Assessment

The Machine Learning model we are developing uses several factors to calculate likelihood measures that a non-reporting business will be closed. The model is based on historical data about authoritatively reporting closed businesses in prior disasters. The historical data which trained the model included three million rows of business status reports from numerous disasters, mostly hurricanes but including winter storms, floods, and wildfires. Factors included geography, business type, a popularity index, Social Vulnerability Index, US Census, and others.
